Hooton died two days after the birth of his great nephew David Glen Smith.
Hooton was a York Rite Mason and a Knight Templar. His Templar sword was “second hand” as the blade bears the name of Joseph B. Peabody, who may have been a hotel manager in Houston in 1930. We have pictures of Hooton in full Templar regalia with sword in 1939.

Aunt Zell’s fried chicken was the best! Â Sunday afternoons were so special with the smells from her kitchen. The chicken, home made biscuits and gravy, fried squash and okra. And there was that heavenly aroma from the gardenia blooms wafting through the screened porch, antique Hunter ceiling fan gently turning ….
THE Chicken:
Ingredients:
1 large chicken cut up
Lawrey’s Seasoned Salt
Adolph’s Meat Tenderizer
3 eggs
2 cups milk
2 cups flour
Salt, pepper, garlic
Directions:
Remove skin from chicken. Agressively tenderize chicken pieces with a fork
Sprinkle chicken lightly with salt, pepper, garlic, Adolph’s, Lawrey’s
Beat eggs into large bowl with milk
Soak chicken into milk then dredge in seasoned flour. Repeat.
Allow batter to turn gooey, then fry in cast iron skillet on medium high heat, turning as needed.
* Season the flour with salt, pepper, garlic and Lawrey’s
