Ed served as a detective on the Dallas Police Department from the mid-50’s to early 70’s. He then started a court reporting service in Dallas, Edward Smith and Associates.

He died April 29, 2013 in Denver Colorado, 11 days after the birth of his first great-granddaughter, Evelyn Joan.
